This post is dedicated to a young sister in Christ, a fellow Substacker. As I was browsing through her posts, there was one that caught my attention, and it was titled, “Avery’s Chronic Pain Adventures #1 – An Introduction.” I realized that there would be many more here on Substack who may be experiencing pain and sickness in their bodies right now. If you or one of your loved ones is suffering, here is a teaching from the word of God that may help you overcome what you are going through. All you’ve got to do is believe and walk in it.
This teaching is dedicated to you Avery, and also to all those who are suffering physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. Believe the truth that Jesus has suffered and paid for your situation, and therefore you don’t have to. He has already paid the price and made a way for your healing, just as He has paid for your salvation and finished it on the Cross of Calvary.
Let me start by laying a foundation. (The Bible verse links will give you the New King James Version)
From the Old Testament, we can easily come to the conclusion that it is God who gives us sickness, for one reason or the other. But in the New Testament, the Son of God has revealed a different truth, that it is the devil who makes us sick. This is a fundamental shift in understanding that we need to grasp to receive our healing from the Lord. Let me give you a few scriptures to establish this.
Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on a Sabbath day and there was a woman who had an infirmity for eighteen years and was bowed down and in no way able to lift herself up. So, Jesus said to her, “Woman you are loosed from your infirmity.” He laid hands on her and healed her, and she stood straight immediately. This kind of triggered the religious types because he had healed her on a Sabbath day. So, the Lord said to the ruler of the synagogue, choosing His words carefully to be very diplomatic and politically correct, “Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” (Luk 13:10-17). Please note the portion that has been emphasized by me. The woman has been bound for eighteen years, not by God but by the devil/satan.
Next is the story of how the Lord sent His angel to a Roman centurion in Caesarea to urge him to invite Peter to his home and how He confirmed it to Peter through a vision. When Peter came to the centurion’s home, he began to preach to those who had gathered there about the resurrected Christ. While doing that he said, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.” (Act 10:38). Again, the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that Jesus went about healing all who were oppressed by the devil because God was with Him, which means, God was undoing the evil works of the devil through Jesus. It was not God who was oppressing the people with sickness or other conditions, but the devil.
Another place in the Bible the Holy Spirit tells us, “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (1Joh 3:8). Holy Spirit tells us that the very purpose for which the Lord Jesus came was to destroy or to undo the works of the devil. If we study all that Jesus did, we can easily know what He was destroying and therefore what the works of the devil were. Jesus healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead and preached the good news of the Kingdon of God. He was destroying sickness and the power of the devil and restoring people to the place where God wanted them to be. He was manifesting Gods power and His Kingdom to them through signs, wonders and miracles and destroying the works of the devil.
Now, if you remember, the Lord Jesus Himself said, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.” (Mat 18:16). I have given you three witnesses from the Scriptures to prove who puts sickness in us, so that you may believe it. Because believing this truth will shift things for you in receiving your healing.
Let’s move on from who gives us sickness to who heals us. The Lord Jesus said,
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.”
Even as we make this shift, we cannot help but notice the Holy Spirit once again underscoring the truth that we saw earlier by saying that the devil comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy. Physical, mental or spiritual sickness is a consequence of the sin which first came into the Garden of Eden, and which infects us until today. When sin came, all of creation was corrupted (Rom 8:18-22) and we live in bodies that still has that corrupted nature. Sin is the most fundamental way in which the devil steals, kills, and destroys what belongs to God. Sickness is the manifestation of corruption and death due to sin and how he imposes it on us in the physical.
But Jesus came to restore us to the condition we were before the fall, when there was neither sin nor sickness nor death and when Adam had the life of God in him by His Holy Spirit. That is why He said we must be born again by His Spirit, (Joh 3:3,5) and also why He said, “I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” To give us His life while we are here on earth, by which we can overcome the stealing, the killing and the destroying of the devil, and also enter eternal life, resurrection life beyond the physical death.
We do not need to be rocket scientists to know that life is the opposite of death. When Jesus said that He came to give us life, it meant that He came to save us from death. The effects of the devil's stealing, killing, and destroying produce death in us. Therefore, sickness and demonic bondage are all manifestations of death that the devil puts on us. Having the life of Jesus does not mean that we can live in this corrupted body forever, but that if we put our trust in Him, He will birth our spirit again and that He will also give us an incorruptible body, the resurrection body, when He returns.
This is the mandate with which the Son of God came into this world.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverence to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
It was all about destroying the works of the devil and introducing the Kingdom of God.
To be continued…
